| A Forest is for Life... |

Our Climate Challenge The month of July seems to have rocketed by - our next local market day will be on Saturday 31st July, 10am until 1pm at Millhouse Village Hall. If you are interested in coming along, put it in your diary as the next one wont be until the end of August - where does the time go to! If you wish to take a stall, please contact Sara on 01700 841298 or at sara@kilfinancommunityforest.com. The forest is still full of noise and activity as its full steam ahead in developing the access road. The chainsaw felling team did a magnificent job in clearing the initial coup of conifers which has allowed access for Alistair McCraes BIG digger to get to work! Alistair will be installing a fully tarmaced bell-mouth entrance and a new forestry access track. Scottish Southern Electric have also been helping us out by clearing away the conifers close to powerlines. All these felled trees mean that theres lots of clearing to be done and the three local lads that make up our Forestry Operations Team ( David Bannister, Scott Hood and Sean Convery) have been working very hard battling with sun, rain and midges as well as the tremendous amount of effort the clearance has required. The felled trees will be milled onsite and processed to supply milled planks, off-cuts and fuelwood for community use. Now the track is well underway the portacabin for the Forestry Operatives Team will be arriving soon, giving them a bit of shelter to have their lunch. The two other members of the Project team, Sara, our Carbon Saving Officer, and Jean, our project administrator, will shortly be moving in to the recently vacated Doctors Surgery in Tighnabruaich, so there will be lots more opportunities for local folks to pop in and discover a bit more about what were doing in the forest and find about allotments, composting, woodfuel, home energy audits and how to save money by doing a bit of car sharing. With all this going on one way of remembering all the activities we are installing this year is by using the W.A.T.C.H.” acronym: W for woodfuel A for allotments T for transport C for composting H for home energy The Public Awareness Event held in May was extremely well attended and were hoping for more of the same for our forthcoming Allotments Event on Thursday 29th July at the Church Hall in Kames. This informal and informative event will be hosted by Ron Gilchrist, a well-known expert in Allotments and Vermiculture and should be an excellent way of finding out more information or put your name down for one of the new forest allotments. The event kicks off at 7.30pm and refreshments will be available - come along and find out how to save money and grow delicious food! If you are interested in finding out more about the project, how to save money in your home or are interested in an allotment then please contact sara@kilfinancommunityforest.com. |
